A strip of native vegetation connects the Central Iowa town of Steamboat Rock with the entrance to Pine Lake State Park two miles to the south. It's growing in the roadside along Hardin county black top S56. The prairie grasses and wildflowers are on both sides of the road. That's a definite clue that this is a planting and not a prairie remnant. Otherwise, except to the more astute observer, it's getting harder and harder to tell.
