摘要

The landscapes of our youth leave indelible marks on each of us, none more so than the gardens of our childhood backyards. The landscape of my youth was a suburb created in an old apple orchard, which had been subdivided when the metropolitan train line reached into it. Fruitful land became double-and triple-fronted homes on quarter-acre blocks. Residences and yards expressed pride of ownership. Collectively, these home landscapes reflected the message on car number plates that Victoria was the "Garden State." Like many children, for me the backyard held a special fascination. I played there in the sandpit, climbed trees, built cubbies and helped my dad in the vegie garden, eating carrots straight out of the ground and sticking the tops back in, hoping he wouldn't notice the missing bits. The backyard was safe and special for me but it was also a place of collective joy, as the venue for regular gatherings of families and friends, from formal celebrations to the happiness of a simple barbecue.
