摘要

Ralph Neale, who has died in Melbourne aged ninety-two, made a vital contribution to the development of landscape architecture in Australia. He expanded our focus by initiating, in 1979, the important quarterly journal Landscape Australia (which continues to this day as Landscape Architecture Australia). His vision was to look at landscape in terms of design, architecture and construction, here and around the world. As editor and publisher, writer and photographer, he covered the big picture and the detail for more than two decades. He promoted conservation - through his journal, through seeking to protect open land, and through hands-on revegetating and tree planting. He recognized the value of indigenous plants but took a broad view; until the end of his life he was the mainstay of the Friends of the Elms newsletter. In all, he wanted to make Australia a better place to live in.
