Anyone interested in the critical link between visual literacy and landscape architecture will find much to value in this compilation of essays edited by Marc Treib. The book is based on papers presented at the symposium "Representing the Designed Landscape: Images, Models, Words" held at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2001. It includes essays by practitioners, educators, and scholars on a broad array of topics related to the portrayal of designed landscapes, particularly during the 20th century. Don't buy Representing Landscape Architecture expecting a technical book on graphic communication that describes ways to depict designed landscapes. In his editorial notes, Treib describes the book as a "what and why" book. The perspective it presents is important for several reasons. The essays emphasize the visual media used in landscape architecture before the computer evolved as a tool in the design studio.
