摘要

Fiona Cowell's book contributes to an established research area, and she therefore assumes a reasonable awareness of the work of eighteenth-century landscape improvers. Although presented as a biography of Richard Woods, this book provides frequent comparison with the work of his better known contemporaries 'Capability' Brown, Richmond and White. As such, it is a book not just for the specialist, but provides much for the more general reader to enjoy. By shifting the focus from the giant Brown, it allows less well known characters to emerge, enriching our understanding of the design process at this critical point for the English landscape.
