This book, as the title suggests, is divided into three parts: the first with the bounding of the 'American' nation (i.e. the United States); the second with the apportioning of this domain into bounded states; and the third with apportioning of most of these states into rectangular parcels. The author is an Adjunct Associate Professor of architecture who teaches the design studio for undergraduates in the Department of Architecture at MIT. He describes himself as being an 'unabashed' 'aficionado' of the rectangular survey which divided most of the western States into square governmental units that were in turn divided into a range of smaller square (or rectangular) sub-units down to the size of an individual property (XIII).
