As a Welshman, I came to this book with a degree of ambiguous interest. Historically, and certainly for part of the medieval period, Welshmen and women were not welcome in the City of Chester. However, having worked in the city for over 15 years my delight in exploring it has not dimmed. It's a real pleasure to walk the walls, lanes, rows and byways and to look to the west where the hills of Wales, not least Moel Famau　(Mother Hill) reminded me of my homeland and also of the fact that for the most part the weather, not least rain comes from the southwest, that is, from Wales.
