This is a book that immediately appeals in that it is short and clearly presented. Windgather Press has become a force in the publication of books of land historical content as you will see from their lists. The book is scholarly and intricate, incorporating, in its explanations, the use of particular places and histories (so well loved of Hoskins and 'his school of writers'), old maps, historic texts and an account of recent initiatives. It brings the historical account of places up to date, not abandoning them in the 1800s. It does not steer away from the science of trace elements and fertility or habitat succession and so cannot be categorised as purely a landscape history, still less, one based solely on documents.
