Alarming news multiply in all the leather markets. Leather used in car-manufacturing posts an over 70% rise, China reduces the orders, so does Vietnam, consumption falls in Europe, English tanners shut down their businesses one after the other, Spanish and Portuguese tanners are close to disaster, manufacturers of tanning machines are out of ideas to get out of the crisis. In several places around the globe, the issue of destroying the skins instead of tanning them has been raised. Some leatherrnqualities are now sold at cheaper price than some plastic materials. With the shutdown of several companies, the risk is to loose the know-how and the reputation that the big companies have built partly thanks to the sector's quality. They might not find the quality they have always expected. To be able to produce leather tomorrow, they should stop decreasing prices of the high quality products otherwise they might have to relocate their workshops the day after tomorrow.
