Currently the leather sector in Sudan contributes US$40 million annually to direct exports and also contributes by about US$5 million in the form of shoes and other leather products. Despite the huge animal population in Sudan and the various advantages, the sector suffers from a lack of new technology and suitable investment conditions in addition to the lack of a clear strategy to support Sudanese exports. Secretary General of the Leather & Shoes Chamber in the Union of Industrial Chambers, Mohammad Suleiman Hassan said that the level of investment required in the leather sector is estimated at between US$120-150 million to be spent on fixed assets and working capital funds.
