Hazaribagh is a densely populated neighbourhood in the Bangladesh capital, Dhaka. Each day some 150 tanneries discharge 21 thousand cubic metres of untreated liquid waste laden with toxic chemicals into gutters that flow into Dhaka's main river. Wastewater floods the houses of local residents in monsoon season. Children play in polluted soil or ponds. The air stinks of noxious gases. Locals told me the tannery waste was making them sick with fevers, skin diseases, respiratory problems and diarrhoea. After 10 days interviewing people in Hazaribagh, I also fell sick.
