There is a saying that leather can be made or spoiled in the beamhouse. This is true. However, leather is enhanced during finishing. This is where saleability and profits are made. Many of the world's tanneries are making leather for shoe factories, garments or leather goods makers. Like all businesses they have two objectives: to fill their tanneries and to make a profit through adding value to the product as it moves through the production process.
