After a long and rapid fall, the steer market finally reached a bottom in mid December. Most selections bounced into double-digit gains just before the Christmas holidays. Differentials in value between branded and non-branded hides evaporated for all practical purposes. Cows remained firm and gained some strength from various origins as well. Heavy Texas steers hit their bottom in early December at as low as $31 and worked up to $35 by mid month. Major packers were able to push buyers up to $36-$37 just before Christmas.
