In Italy cow hides are said to have been traded as low as €0.20/kg while other stories say hides have been taken away from abattoirs without any payment at all. All confirm trade at levels of €0.40-0.45/kg delivered but the prices below that as well as the story of free hides is denied by others. Still the stories of hides at 20 or 25 cents could well be true. For instance some time ago there was a sale of 100 containers of French hides to China which were refused by the Chinese and returned to Europe where they were resold in Italy. After the first deliveries the quality proved bad and the contract was cancelled. A lot like that would probably not bring more than 25 cents. Why should one pay more for hides which have travelled around the world and been refused twice?
