Les procédés Fastmet~® et Fastmelt~® ont été développés dans le but de convertir des déchets d'aciérie en préréduits (éponges ou briquettes) ou en fonte. Ces procédés comprennent un système d'agglomération pour le briquetage ou le bouletage des déchets, un four à sole tournante Fastmet et, si on le souhaite, un four de fusion Fastmelt directement couplé dans le but d'obtenir de la fonte liquide. Midrex et sa société-mère Kobe Steel ont exploité des unités pilotes et évalué les coûts de production correspondants.%The Fastmet / Fastmelt processes are technologies developed for the recovery of steel mill wastes and converting them into DRI, HBI or hot metal. The processes utilize an agglomeration system for briquetting or pelletizing of the wastes for feed to a Fastmelt rotary hearth furnace for reduction and, if desired, a direct coupled Fastmelt melting furnace for producing hot metal. Midrex and its parent company, Kobe Steel, have been operating small scale units and estimated the corresponding production costs.
