摘要

This article surveys the current state of Extensible Markup Language (XML), a metalanguage for creating structured documents that describe their own content, and its implications for information professionals. The article predicts that XML's simplicity, platform-independence and widespread industry support will soon make it the common language underlying the Web, word processing and database formats. A companion technology, Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) will offer unprecedented opportunities for information professionals to reclaim control of the structure and presentation of the data to which they provide access. XML and XSL documents, and pointers to introductory XML information is provided.
