摘要

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) is the alpha/beta test site for 3M Library Systems Digital Identification System. One of the components of this system is the digital Library Assistant (DLA), a handheld collection management device. Since October of 1999, 3M has consulted with UNLV library staff on the development of this product, which has the ability to shelf-read, shelve, and search for library items. Positive aspects of the DLA include flexibility, efficiency and usability; a less desirable aspect is the initial cost of the system. Competition in the field and the future of this technology is discussed.
