摘要

The first collected edition of the works of the English reformer, Bible translator, and controversialist William Tyndale was edited by John Foxe, the celebrated martyrologist, and published by John Day in 1572-73 as The Whole Workes of William Tyndall, John Frith, and Doctor Barnes. Scholars have recognized the importance of the book. Elizabeth Evenden describes it as a 'prestigious volume' that was both 'financed and researched' by Day. John N. King provides a detailed account of the place of the project in the careers of both Foxe and Day. Other scholars describe editorial liberties taken by Foxe in preparing the works of Tyndale and his fellow reformers for publication.4 Foxe describes his purpose in undertaking the editorial labour. In his 'Epistle or Preface to the Christian Reader', he reports his desire to preserve works by Tyndale and other 'holsome and auncient writers: whose doinges and teachinges otherwise had lyen in oblivion' but who 'geeve now no lesse lyght to all ages and posteritie after them'. Tyndale he calls one of the 'chiefe ryngleaders in these latter tymes of thys Church of England'. Foxe praises Tyndale's prologues to his New Testament editions of the English Bible in particular: 'in his Prologues uppon ... the Gospelles, and Epistles of S. Paule ... how perfectly doth he hit the right sence, and true meaning in every thing'.
