An IO-540-S1A5 crammed into the wing of a Piper Aerostar can initiate such an intense detonation sequence during climb out that the engine can self-destruct within 90 seconds. The resulting metal contamination from the melted piston is generally so severe that the big Lycoming is usually rendered inoperative for the remainder of the flight. It comes on quick and can be identified to the wary by a subtle rumbling through the fuselage. This vibration gets worse as the compression ring lands give way to the extreme pressures developed in the cylinder. It's difficult to compress a burning fuel/air mixture-especially when the ignition sequence starts too soon on the compression stroke.
