Lifters (also called tappets by Ly coming), and sometimes cam fol lowers are what the lobes of your camshaft rotate (rub) against in normal operation. They transmit the rotary motion of the cam lobe to the push rod, which (in turn) transmits that up and down motion to the rocker arm and on to the tip of the valve. Lifters can be one solid piece of metal (so-called solid lifters), or they can be a somewhat intricate, oil-filled, check-valve actuated, spring-loaded plunger affair (so-called hydraulic lifters, by far the most prevalent).
