The answer is that it's primarily a matter of variability in the auto fuel supply. Also, slight mods to the fuel system from stock can have an adverse effect, such as nonstandard fuel line routing or any other changes from the stock configuration such as heat shields missing. The second aspect concerns situations where an owner is using auto fuel in a certified airplane for which there is no STC available. There is a requirement that each plane make, model and engine type be certified and an STC granted.
