Editor's Note: Last month we reviewed the pros and cons of upgrading to a Continental IO-550 engine for those eligible aircraft, such as certain Bonanzas, Cessna 210s and 206s. The conclusion was that it was an excellent upgrade with substantial performance improvements as well as a more cost effective upgrade in total mileage that can be covered during the TBO run. Several shops offer alternative STC choices, with substantial variations available. The cost for this improvement was estimated to be in the neighborhood of an additional $10,000 over rebuilding an equivalent IO-520, notwithstanding other requirements such as a new prop if needed. This concluding installment by the author goes into more of the nuts and bolts of the upgrade process and procedure. This particular Bonanza, a V-35, was used in a Part 135 commercial operation, so it was subjected to tighter FAA standards. Thus, upon reaching TBO the engine, while still running fine, was upgraded to a factory reman IO-550 in 2003 from an IO-550. The 2008 replacement IO-550 engine was done by RAM Aircraft-see the previous story. An owner operating under the typical Part 91 standards has the opportunity to save much more money in a number of areas.
