In an infrequent flying environment, camshafts and lifters can really deteriorate badly from corrosion and spalling. Unfortunately, oil analysis is very weak in this area as a predictive tool for camshaft condition.rnMost Continental engines and a few Lycoming models are designed so that the cam followers (lifters) may be removed without disassembling the engine. Removal allows for a examination of the lifter face and cam lobe profile when cam condition is suspect due to poor performance.
