While most engines for light aircraft are air-cooled, air alone is not sufficient to do the job. The lubricating oil provides up to 35 percent of total engine cooling. To aid in that effort, most engines are equipped with oil coolers used to shed heat in the oil generated by friction and combustion. A thermostatic valve determines the flow of oil either through or around the cooler normally based on oil temperature (some old designs use oil viscosity).rnWe recommend a brand-new or specialty shop (repair station) inspection and re-certification of your existing cooler (as opposed to the overhaul shop simply power flushing your cooler, which is not particularly effective).
