The mechanic's bible or AC 43.13-1B, Acceptable Methods, Techniques, And Practice, Aircraft Inspection And Repair, by and large is a well done document. There are some areas, however, that can be used inappropriately by a mechanic to tell an owner to start pulling cylinders needlessly. One example is Chapter 8, para 8-14, compression testing of aircraft cylinders. In the event that a compression test should fail to be at least 60/80 the chapter mandates pulling the cylinder in the event that valve staking, or a three minute run and recheck fail to bring the cylinder back above 60/80.
