When we clean the old oilrnfilter out at each oil change (on our Lycoming 540-series engine), we unfold the element and rinse it on a shop cloth and find on the cloth fine non-ferrous (nonmagnetic) metal particles, which we assume to be aluminum. Our oil samples are normal and constant; the last five samples showed 34,23,19,16, and 14 ppm of aluminum.rnThe amount of the fine particles is normal, according to my A&P mechanic. I have no experience with this, however, and would therefore appreciate your comments, if any, on aluminum flakes in the filter.
