We started covering the concept of ICAs on aircraft starting batteries last month. It came to our attention as a matter of performing a battery "shoot-out" between Gill and Concorde for Aviation Consumer magazine. As is often the case in product testing, new or different things come up as important as the basic test concept. As a quick summary, It's clearly the battery maker's position and appears supported under the instructions for continued airworthiness (ICA) guidelines that annual battery capacity testing should be conducted. This categorization of battery testing into the ICA concept is quite new and field compliance with these ICAs is almost nonexistent.
