A ccording to the FAA, the aver-age general aviation aircraft in use today is over 32 years old. Many parts have been replaced numerous times during this period as normal maintenance. Parts are often substituted or changed slightly due to ignorance, convenience, as a cheaper solution or plain unavailability of the original. There are mechanics now in the industry that have never seen what the original configuration of an aircraft was. Unfortunately, many maintenance and parts manuals are very unclear to such items as routing of fuel lines, placement of cooling (blast) tubes, clamping of fuel lines, and even the exact specifications of flexible or rigid fuel and vent lines. This begs for inaccuracies in maintenance of these systems.
