Oil is the lifeblood of your engine. Unfortunately, oil is unable to heal itself as blood can. And no matter what anyone tells you or how gee-whiz the new oils seem, there is nothing like frequent changes to do the most you can for your engine. Conversely, one of the worst things you can do to your engine is to let it sit and not change the oil. Regular oil changing, whether you fly a little or a lot, is essential to long engine life. Changing your own oil is specifically permitted per the. FARs for any owner as long as you, are a licensed private pilot (or above) and it's your plane. Oil definitely wears out―even while just sitting in your engine. Water enters the oil by condensation inside the engine. This process acidifies the oil. Other contaminants form from combustion by-products in the engine and get past the rings to the sump.
