On October 31,1957, Lycoming re-ceived Type Certification for the O-540-A1A, followed by the introduction of the IO-540-B1A5 in May 1960. Although it was not necessarily clear at the time, those two original engine models would lead the way for the production of some 112 carbureted and fuel-injected 540 engine variations. They also defined the design philosophy behind which all Lycoming engines are built: An air-cooled engine should be able to withstand extremes in temperature while providing safe, predictable performance over the long haul. They have done just that by building two bulletproof engine styles described in a way that continues to this day. For 45 years, Lycoming has supplied "parallel" and "angle" valve 540 engines that muscle through a maximum-rate climb like singed bat. This installment will deal primarily with crankcases and cylinders. Next month we will finish up with crankshafts camshafts, the IO-540 and some accessory issues.
