A vionics instruments fail far too often due to corrosion rather than component failure, and the depressing results are found on shelves collecting dust in instrument shops across the country. Because of its insidious and generally slow progression, it's not always identified as the cause, fhis is unfortunate as corrosion is a major problem with instrument and avionics failure, and not well understood by some shops. Even minuscule amounts of corrosion can cause intermittent electrical and electronic malfunctions or complete failures. Unfortunately, cost constraints and design compromises add to the problem. Component placement, such as the vacuum filter inside some aircraft are located too close to leaking seams or access covers. Moisture enters the filter and when the vacuum pump is activated, the moisture is pulled into the lines, pump and instruments.
