The one thing we see is a tendency of owners wanting to minimize and defer as many maintenance expenses at the annual as they can with Part 91-operated aircraft, yet they expect the annual alone to keep them airworthy for a year with no further maintenance action that may be recommended by the inspector for keeping the plane safe. It's hard to have it both ways. Our staff IA does quite a number of owner-assisted annuals, and he finds he is in a constant battle with owners, for example, not wanting to replace a $40 cracked lens. Moreover, these owners often are flying 30-year-old planes with many original parts that are past the recommended overhaul or replacement dates on accessories by years. More intense, not less intense annuals are needed for safety.
