Your editor, on one of several New Zealand trips. We always managed as many flying, jet boating and hiking adventures as possible. It's a beautiful country to explore by air. Below, flying down the Franz Joseph glacier to a seaside dirt strip back at the car. Plan to visit Mil-ford Sound as well (fly-in is best). The top natural sights are best seen and reached by light aircraft such as ski planes and light twins for general sightseeing on the South island. The North island has more geothermal sights and ocean boating adventures, and is quite different. In spite of three trips to New Zealand, and rental cars, we hardly scratched the surface. The Milford Track is a multi-day hike that needs reservations long in advance, but there are other short and long hikes that you can take with little to no notice such as the Routeburn track.
