While winter may seem a bit of an odd time to discuss oil temperatures, the reality of the matter is that poorly controlled oil temperatures on the low side can also be destructive to the engine. If oil temps during operation are not high enough, water vapor that naturally accumulates in the oil sump will not evaporate. This water finds its way into the sump via combustion by-products and some inevitable blow-by. It also gets there by simple condensation that forms in the sump and on other engine components during temperature swings between the sump and outside air. Look at the light colored wet sludge that is often found in the oil filler cap. This contains acids as well as water. Even if you don't see this deposit on the back side of the filler cap it does not assure you that excess water is not building up. Operating at proper oil temperatures year round will help greatly to minimize water dilution of the oil.
