From time-to-time we get mail from mechanics who feel we are trying to tell owners of certificated aircraft how to do all their own maintenance and bypass the mechanic other than to get a sign-off to have a repair made "legal." Nothing could be further from the truth. While it is possible for a non-A&P owner to do virtually everything the A&P can do, it is only under very specific conditions. The most important of these conditions is that the owner must be under the supervision of a mechanic that is himself qualified and knowledgeable to do the repair. That doesn't mean the supervising mechanic is a phone call away; it means supervising the owner to the degree that every step is checked before it is covered up or put together and further inspec- . tion is not possible without another tear-down. Other important conditions are that all relevant data must be available for reference and all necessary tools and the approved parts used. The resulting repair must be no less professional than if the A&P did it himself.
