As we fly less and less, the warranties that we get with repair work become less and less valuable. That's because most repair/overhaul warranties are generally based on two factors-hours in service and calendar time, whichever occurs first-and it's almost always calendar time first, because we fly so little. For the average owner that means he gets virtually no warranty other than the first few starts in some cases since the calendar time on most warranties bears no real-world relation to the operating hours segment, considering the dramatic drop in a typical owner s annual flight time. As a result of the usual calendar time or flight hours, whichever occurs first clause, it's the calendar time that expires long before the warranted service hours. This can let even shoddy work survive the calendar time warranty, so you need to choose repair shops carefully since you will likely have little in the way of warranty coverage.
