There are many reasons why batteries must be replaced. Plate sulfation and deposits produced by the interaction between sulfuric acid and the lead plates contained within a battery box can collect at the bottom of the cells, eventually shorting out adjoining plates. Shorted cells, open cell circuits, and various forms of fried, burned, and blistered internal battery connections are all reasons for battery replacement as well.
