Irecently got an e-mail from a reader with a substantial quantity of Aeroshell mineral oil that was 20 years old, asking if it was safe to use. Anyone who looks at the bottle of today s AD straight Aeroshell oil will find it states retesting at a four year limit. This is for AD oils. No such statement is on the single 25-year-old oil bottle of Aeroshell mineral oil that I checked (I can't vouch for new bottles of mineral oil), but I would not use 20-year-old oil of any type without it being tested. The risk is just too great for the money saved (or lost depending on how you look at it). He asked LPM to have his oil tested for the public good. I would like to think that he is one of relatively few people who keep such large quantities of very old oil on hand for decades and it is somehow our duty to have it tested for him in case there are others like him. I believe that is more of a personal responsibility due to wildly varying storage conditions. There is no simple, pat answer, but call Aeroshell at minimum for advice.
