Lycoming Service Instruction 1009AV, dated August 2013, on engine TBOs has undergone both broad as well as very detailed, and sweeping changes, as to why the factory feels it is is being very straightforward on the likelihood of reaching TBO in today s extremely low flying hour environment. They seem to have lots of blame they would like to spread around. Here are some important elements as we understand them. Some owners are not following engine storage procedures, or taking care of engines properly. A second (and specious argument in our view) is that owners are using PMA parts, thus making TBOs impossible to establish when they use non OEM parts. Both Lycoming and TCM feel this way and have published it in their new service documents, which we will discuss in detail below.
