Overfilling your sump with oil is not good on several counts, but it continues to happen all too often. It wastes oil and can cause other engine issues, including misdiagnosing a nonexistent oil burning problem. An aircraft engine tends to trap oil outside the sump for quite some time after shutdown-much more so than an auto engine. Because of this possibility it's probably not a good idea to do an immediate sump check for oil quantity right after shutdown. The chance of overfilling your sump is quite high then as is the likelihood of making an error of just how much oil really is in the engine.
