Anew report from UITP, released at its International Rail Conference in Munich, demonstrates the impressive growth of light rail worldwide over the last three decades. Light Rail in Figures shows that 120 new systems have opened since 1985, and 78 since 2000. The US holds the majority of the new openings since the start of the 21st Century (23), more so than even France (20), widely held as the modern pioneer of the mode. Over the same period Spain has opened 16 new systems, with Turkey next at eight. The good news is openings far outweigh closures, with only 13 over the same period - eight in the former Soviet Union, four in Romania and one in Egypt.
