From time to time I hear the complaint that the IES is a sleepy, stodgy association and that the only good thing a member receives for their dues is the beautiful LD+A magazine. Here is my follow-up question to the complainant: What are you doing as an IES member to get a return on your investment? The value of membership is a shared bargain; not only does the IES need to provide ' value to members, but also the member needs to actively engage to tap that value. The old saying about only getting out of something what you put into it applies here as it does in many areas of our lives. Every week I meet active, passionate IES volunteers who make unbelievable contributions to their local Section, or to an IES committee—and nearly always, they describe an experience of getting so much out of their IES involvement.
