Unless you were living on one of those exoplanets about which I spoke in my last column, you know that general service incandescent lamps (GSL) covered by the DOE's appliance regulations (defined by the Energy Policy and Conservation Act of 1975 and amended by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, known as EISA 2007) have been subject to phase-out based on minimum efficacy standards. The most recent example was the phase-out of the beloved 100-75-60-W general service incandescent lamps (remember, the 40-W lamp was exempted but may be rolled into the new rule). They were replaced by higher efficacy halogen types (e.g., a 72-W halogen replaced the 100-W standard incandescent). Along with these halogen types, CFLs and LEDs rounded out the choices for screw-base sockets.
