The myriad applications possible through connected street lighting lead us to consider other factors. These include: 1. New capabilities generate new responsibilities. While some data-driven innovations will impact lighting directly, many others will create value in domains beyond lighting such as air quality monitoring, smart parking, traffic management or public safety. To fully realize the potential of street lighting in adjacent domains, it is imperative for cities to manage and allocate resources across traditional departmental boundaries. Some examples include procurement strategies, maintenance budgets, liability assessments and quality control or calibration especially where critical infrastructures are concerned.
