Prompted by lighting's growing role in the loT, manufacturers, technology companies and industry groups including Enlighted, Tridonic and DesignLights Consortium announced at LIGHTFAIR the loT-Ready Alliance, which hopes to develop a standard for "loT-ready" fixtures. The alliance's goal is to ensure all new LED light fixtures be shipped with a standard socket that enables sensors and connectivity modules to be easily added to the fixture after installation. According to the alliance, an estimated 350 million LED light fixtures will ship worldwide this year, but less than 5 percent will include an loT sensor. Companies that adopt LED lighting without loT capabilities now face a "lock-in risk" because upgrading to IoT after a fixture is installed is "prohibitively expensive." Further, that lock-in has the potential to endure as long as the lamps do—potentially decades—during which time technology will continue to advance, prompting the need for generational updates.
