The introduction of solid-state lighting devices like LEDs has added some new challenges, both from home and abroad. Jeff Goldstein, CEO of LaMar Lighting, revealed that some Chinese companies, with no background in the U.S. lighting industry, are offering to sell flat 2-ft by 2-ft LED panels, LED tubes and vaportites to just about anyone, and at prices below his cost (editor's note: and probably below their cost as well). In the past, people wouldn't buy a no-name fluorescent ballast, and when one of the known brand ballasts failed within the warranty period, they expected it to be replaced, at no cost, immediately. In addition, many of these LED luminaire manufacturers cut costs by reducing the quality of the components they use, which adversely affects the product's life expectancy. An LED unit may have a stated warranty of five or 10 years, but the same manufacturer may notify you that a new board introduced less than a year ago is now obsolete.
