The merging of the 5,000-seat Star Performing Arts Centre with the Star Vista mall in Singapore makes a good case for combining cultural activities with high-end entertainment. The complex is popular mostly because of its multiple usages, but its appeal is heightened by the building's striking architecture and complementary lighting design. Reiko Kasai, director of Lighting Planners Associates, Tokyo, says that the firm is especially pleased with the project when they notice people spending more leisure time at the site, as opposed to visiting for one specific reason. "We have been able to achieve good results with the combination of indirect lighting (for the soft illumination of building surfaces) and compact direct lighting (for creating desired contrast and focus)," Kasai adds.
