Traditionally, "social media" simply meant the exchange of information or ideas within a network. But over the past decade or so, the term has been twisted and pulled in many directions-coined, branded, used and re-used while individuals, companies and organizations consider the topic, its meaning, and its pros and cons. Today, social media is defined by Merriam-Webster as "any form of electronic communication through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages and other content." Under this umbrella definition, there are a few even smaller "umbrellas" (see chart) including social networks (for example, Facebook, Linkedln and Google+), media sharing or content communities (YouTube, Vimeo, Pinterest and Instagram), blogs and microblogs (Twitter, Wordpress and Tumblr), and bookmarking and social news sites.
