As a technical society, we have a tendency to think about the development of lighting and lighting-related activities as somehow progressing in a technologically logical fashion- with development "B" following development "A" through history. Because of this, from time to time we miss the opportunity to see the wider societal and cultural influences that have also impacted the history of lighting. That certainly would be true of a book seeking to connect the technical affairs of the Wizard of Menlo Park, Thomas Edison, with the entertainment aspirations of P.T. Barnum, as seen through the life of an elephant named Topsy. As implausible as it might seem, not only does such a connection exist, but it also becomes the basis for a thoroughly entertaining as well as educational novel.
