After being involved in energy conservation on both coasts for the past 20 years, I had the opportunity last month to audit the lighting in several high-rise office buildings in Tulsa, OK. What a culture shock it was to hear an executive of the American Electric Power (AEP) of Oklahoma say, "I don't envy you guys on the two coasts. We have no trouble generating enough capacity to meet peak load demand; I don't know how you maintain your distribution system when it carries so much more load than it was designed for." Unlike utilities on both the East and the West Coasts, AEP does not levy a peak demand charge. However, it does have an Energy Efficiency Incentive Program to shave demand and shed load.
